Medical Expenses and Evacuation
Medical Expenses and Evacuation Cover is the most important and core benefit in any international travel policy. It protects you from high medical costs abroad due to accident or sickness (including COVID-19 in most plans). All major Indian insurers — Bajaj Allianz, Tata AIG, ICICI Lombard, Reliance, Care Health, HDFC ERGO, Niva Bupa etc. — offer this as a standard feature in overseas plans (not in domestic).
Medical Expenses:
Covers hospitalization, surgery, doctor visits, diagnostics, prescription medicines, ambulance, Outpatient treatment and emergency dental (due to accident).
Emergency Medical Evacuation: Arranges and pays for transport to the nearest adequate medical facility or back to India (repatriation) if local treatment is insufficient.
Cashless & Reimbursement: Cashless at network hospitals; reimbursement for others.
Extensions: , maternity (limited in some), home nursing post-hospitalization.
Benefits:
High sums insured (USD 50,000 to USD 10,00,000+), crucial in expensive countries (USA/Europe bills can exceed ₹50–100 lakh).
24/7 global assistance for doctor referrals, hospital admission, and direct billing.
Covers unforeseen illness/sickness from day one (no waiting period).
Evacuation saves lives in remote areas or when specialized care is needed.
Basic plans: USD 50,000–1,00,000. Premium plans: USD 5,00,000–10,00,000+. Dental: USD 300–1,000 (accident only).
Sub-limits may apply (e.g., room rent) unless waived in higher variants.
Claim Requirements:
1. Notify immediately: Call insurer's 24/7 helpline before/during treatment (mandatory for cashless/evacuation).
2. Cashless: Insurer coordinates with hospital.
3. Reimbursement: Pay first, then claim.
4. Documents: Claim form, original bills/receipts, prescriptions, discharge summary, doctor's reports, policy/passport/visa copies.
5. File within 30–60 days of return/discharge; settlement 15–45 days.
Common Exclusions:
Pre-existing diseases (unless PED add-on purchased).
Routine check-ups, cosmetic/planned treatments.
Self-inflicted injury, war, adventure sports (unless add-on).
Treatment in India.
Advice:
Always choose high sum insured (min USD 5,00,000 for USA/Europe). For seniors, add PED cover and sub-limit waiver. Cashless works best — save helpline number offline.
