Personal Accident
Protection for serious injury or worse
Fingers crossed you never need this. This will offer financial support in case of death or disability if the carrier meets with an accident.
When Personal Accident Benefits Are Payable
The PA cover is triggered only if the injury, death, or disability is directly caused by a sudden, unforeseen, external, violent, and visible accident occurring during the policy period (i.e., while the trip is active—from departure to return).
Typical benefits include:
Accidental Death: 100% of the PA sum insured is paid to the nominee/legal heir if the insured dies as a direct result of the accident. The death must occur within 12 months (365 days) from the date of the accident.
Permanent Total Disability (PTD): 100% of the sum insured if the accident leads to total, irreversible loss of function (e.g., loss of both eyes, both limbs, or complete paralysis preventing any work). The disability must be confirmed as permanent and occur within 12 months of the accident.
Permanent Partial Disability (PPD): A percentage of the sum insured (as per a predefined table in the policy, e.g., 50% for loss of one limb or one eye, 25-50% for loss of fingers/toes/hearing in one ear).
The accident must happen while traveling (e.g., on road, rail, air, or during activities covered under the policy). For international plans, it's worldwide; for domestic, within India. In standard domestic plans (like Bharat Yatra Suraksha per IRDAI guidelines), it covers accidents during travel via taxi, bus, train, ship, or airplane.
Key Circumstances for Claim Approval
The accident must be the sole and direct cause—no contribution from illness, disease, or pre-existing conditions.
Proof required: Police FIR (especially for road accidents), death certificate/post-mortem report (for death claims), medical reports/disability certificate from a qualified doctor.
Claims are usually settled as a lump sum (benefit-based, not reimbursement).
Time limit: Intimate the insurer immediately (within 30 days typically), and submit documents within 90-180 days.
Common Exclusions (When Benefits Are NOT Payable)
PA claims are denied in these scenarios (standard across Indian insurers, aligned with IRDAI norms):
1
Intentional self-injury, suicide, or attempted suicide.
2
Accidents under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or intoxicants (e.g., drunk driving).
3
Participation in hazardous/adventure sports (e.g., bungee jumping, mountaineering, motor racing) unless specifically added as an add-on.
4
War, invasion, terrorism, civil commotion, or nuclear risks.
5
Pre-existing diseases or conditions contributing to the accident/disability.
6
Criminal acts or violation of law.
7
Air travel except as a fare-paying passenger on a licensed commercial airline.
8
Professional sports or paid hazardous occupations.
9
For domestic plans: Often excludes accidents while driving/riding own vehicle or two-wheelers.
Always read the policy wording carefully
Additional Insights
Sum Insured Variability — Most insurers tie PA to the plan variant (Silver/Basic: lower ~₹10L; Gold/Platinum Premium: higher ~₹25-50L).
Common Carrier Boost — Many companies pay higher ( additional amount ) if accident occurs on flight/train/bus.
Exclusions (Common Across All) — No coverage for adventure sports (unless add-on), intoxication, self-injury, war, or professional sports.
Best Picks — For high PA: Tata AIG (reliable fixed INR amount). For customization: Bajaj Allianz or ICICI Lombard (add-ons)
PA is a benefit-based payout (lump sum), not reimbursement—quick if documents (FIR, medical reports, death certificate) are submitted promptly. Always check the latest policy wording on the insurer's site, or ask me, as sums can vary by age, and plans suminsured. If you share your trip details, I can recommend the best fit quotes! Safe travels!
